It’s nearly here! Join us tomorrow (August 29th) at 6pm at Village Hall (510 Green Bay Road) for Winnetka’s Downtown Master Plan Preview Party.  We’ve come such a long way over the past year thanks to the input, insights and guidance of Winnetka residents, business owners, Village Officials and the dedicated Project Steering Committee.

Swing by Village Hall between 6-7pm tomorrow to enjoy cake and refreshments, chat with Steering Committee members and project consultants, and view a series of boards showcasing Draft Plan recommendations and findings. Join us on Monday, August 29th at 6pm for a Preview Party to celebrate Winnetka’s Downtown Master Plan.  The past 10 months of collaborative feedback, engagement, workshops and events have come down to this! Come view your ideas and input in action. Boards showcasing proposed plan elements will be on display, chat with steering committee members and consultants.  Be sure to stick around for the final Steering Committee meeting to highlight the Plan starting at 7pm!

Hey Winnetka!  Join us tonight (7pm at Village Hall) to review the Draft Urban Design and Land Use Sections of the Downtown Master Plan.  We have been listening, learning and refining recommendations based on the steady flow of input received over the past year. Come out at 7pm to view a presentation on the proposed recommendations and district-specific considerations. Join us next Monday, July 25th at 7pm to review the Draft Urban Design and Land Use Plans for Winnetka’s Downtown Master Plan.  The evening will include a presentation of major recommendations and themes unique to each of these topics as they apply to Winnetka’s business districts. All of the recommendations take into account feedback and desires as heard through public outreach and meetings to date! Following the presentations and discussion by the Steering Committee, everyone who attends will have the opportunity to comment and share their input!  Looking forward to seeing and hearing from you.

Market and transportation findings align with public desires and vision statements

Monday evening’s (6/27) steering committee presentation on final market findings and transportation concepts was greeted with consensus. The meeting, which ran from 7-9:30pm at Village Hall began with a presentation of market findings by Linda Goodman of Goodman Williams Group followed by transportation recommendations by Kelly Conolly of Sam Schwartz Engineering.

Linda Goodman of Goodman Williams Group will present the final market findings and Kelly Conolly, with Sam Schwartz Engineering, will follow with transportation findings.

Under the Microscope: Winnetka Downtown Development Regulations Receive Insightful Review

Winnetka’s land use and development regulations were the focus of Tuesday evening’s Steering Committee meeting. From zoning and design review to the overlay, special uses and beyond. Michael Blue with Teska opened the discussion by asking a series of questions relating to the primary topic areas:

• What alternatives to current zoning procedures might be considered?

• How does the intent and application of the overlay district reflect the vision statements?

• What elements are most important to consider as part of the design review process?

• What type of administrative approval for some building elements (signs, awnings, etc.) would be appropriate?

All members took part in a productive and thorough 2-hour conversation that resulted in the following findings and considerations for next steps / plan actions. Scroll down to see idea boards showcasing talking points in greater detail.

Join us tonight, 7pm at Village Hall, for the Downtown Master Plan Steering Committee Meeting.  On the talking table: Discussion of regulations that affect development and district improvements in Winnetka.

The next step of the Winnetka Downtown Master Plan provess is considering the extent to which Village zoning and development regulations secure desirable business and development in the commercial districts (Downtown Elm, Hubbard Woods and Indian Hill).  The Master Plan will consider five aspects of regulations: 1) The Zoning Entitlement Process, 2) Overlay, 3) Design Review, 4) Parking and 5) Signs.



Everyone who attends will have an opportunity to voice their ideas and feedback following Steering Committee discussion.

Results: 1000+ Votes Received on the Urban Design Quick Poll

Thank you Winnetka for the 1,000+ responses to last month’s Urban Design Quick Poll.  We heard you loud and clear — relative to urban design, landscaping and outdoor patios are the top “wants” with lighting and bike amenities highly desired as well.  A detailed pie chart relaying responses is noted below.





The results of the Quick Poll were discussed at last month’s steering committee meeting (held April 25th), which focused on Infrastructure and Urban Design.  The steering committee reviewed poll results and public comments and agreed on the following:

Landscaping – is a top priority. The Village needs to consider how it can be attractive year round.

Outdoor Dining – can be costly to implement for owners and is a private business decision; should not retrofit (widen) existing sidewalks to accommodate – but can work in created bump outs or pedestrian plazas. Important to many residents and visitors.

Bikesmust be a part of the districts based on all previous discussions. Need to think in terms of multiple types of users 1) children going to school etc, 2) residents on convenience & recreation trips and 3) regional bikers passing through town. Consider that facilities must consider both access around town and places people are going.

Lighting – Needed for business and important for safety.

Gateways – Important for visitors and reflecting character of the Village. Good for letting people know they have arrived someplace special. Also important for those on bikes or Metra.

Wayfinding – implementation relates to Gateways. Can be a low cost items with limited number of signs (part of why scored as low priority. Do not want to include so many signs as to create sign clutter – be focused in use. Can be incorporated with new developments in some locations

Pedestrian Enhancements – very important to preserve and further improve pedestrian connectivity, amenities and crossings.

Parking – close by parking is useful for families with little children.

Street Furniture – benches and trash/recycling receptacles are already in place; need to continue to provide and maintain street amenities to ensure business districts invite users to stay and hang out.
