Monday evening’s (6/27) steering committee presentation on final market findings and transportation concepts was greeted with consensus. The meeting, which ran from 7-9:30pm at Village Hall began with a presentation of market findings by Linda Goodman of Goodman Williams Group followed by transportation recommendations by Kelly Conolly of Sam Schwartz Engineering.

On April 13, the Village published a special edition of the Winnetka Report newsletter– entirely dedicated to the Downtown Master Plan. We invite you to learn about the process and what the community has said about the future of the business districts to-date. Also, you will be able to explore the redevelopment site concepts discussed by the Steering Committee in February and March, 2016.

wondered what the Post Office site could be in the future? Should our downtowns be
walkable, drivable or bikeable? All three? How do you feel about murals? What about
a gateway arch curving over Green Bay Road, welcoming drivers to Hubbard Woods?
Would you enjoy a few pocket parks sprinkled throughout retail and commercial spaces?
Join us at Monday’s 2/29 Steering Committee meeting to hear discussion focused on Redevelopment Sites within the Village! All who come will have the chance to listen, learn and share their perspectives at the end of the meeting. Having developed consensus on vision statements for the Village’s commercial districts, a follow up step in the downtown planning process is to consider how those statements may apply to future development. As defined in the Downtown Master Plan work program, four potential development sites are to be evaluated for how they can best advance plan objectives – the Downtown Post Office site, which was selected prior to beginning the plan, and three others. The sites were selected in order to:
- Serve as an example – Each site is exemplary of a development condition such as being a gateway, full block, partial block, etc. The purpose for this distinction is that lessons learned from the site evaluation may be applied to similar properties in the study areas should they ever be proposed for development.
- Support and explain the vision – A prospect to advance the district’s vision is conveyed through each of the sites, for example: generate vitality, bring new businesses, support existing businesses, provide gathering spaces, etc.
- Consider realistic potential for development – For each of the sites, developers or owners have expressed some degree of interest in redevelopment—meaning there might be a potential to influence the near-future.
- Include multiple districts – The sites are not all located in the same business district, two are in Downtown and two are in Hubbard Woods; no Indian Hill site was found to meet the above criteria.

Teska Associates, project consultants, will be hosting a Public Workshop to develop a community vision for the business districts. Complimentary water, tea, and coffee will be provided.
The event will be held at North Shore Country Day School (Upper School) on Monday, November 16 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
North Shore Country Day is located at 310 Green Bay Road. Participants should enter from Green Bay and park in the lot closest to the Upper School main doors.
The Public Workshop is one of many opportunities to get involved with this high priority project for the Village of Winnetka. Come share your ideas about how to improve the Elm Street, Hubbard Woods, and Indian Hill business districts.
